California produces a tremendous quantity of wine, eleven times that of Washington State, in fact, its closest US rival in terms of volume. And yet, prices have never been higher. While I can neither explain nor justify this reality, I can offer valuable insights on where to look, what to look for, and whose wine to consider if you want to drink California, yet prefer to use your rent money for rent rather than wine.
We'll sample Cabernet Sauvignons from places like Paso Robles, Zinfandels from Dry Creek Valley, rich and supple Merlots from Sonoma Valley, and other varieties, such as Petite Sirah, from the Santa Cruz Mountains and beyond. We'll compare these wines with similar examples from Washington State and Oregon, both of whom offer wines that easily compete with those from the Golden State, and often surpass them, especially in the under $20 range. And of course, you'll also taste artisanal, handmade cheeses from all along the west coast, and see if the maxim "What grows together, goes together" actually holds up.
While the names of these producers may be new to you, they have been plying their craft for decades, and would be truly grateful for your support. Best of all, many of the wines we will taste are available in NYC, but first, you just need to know they're here. We hope you can attend.
As always, an array of beautiful breads and cheeses will be on offer, all from Murray's, and paired with the wines.
